Two musical mice – "Vini" and "Tom" are taking a well-deserved nap one afternoon when they hear that God is releasing their old friend Noah. He’s fed up with the Earth project and wants to start over, so he tells the man to start building A boat big enough to hold two of each creature, then he lets down enough rain to wipe the slate clean and invite animals from all over – via airmail – as he sets about building his ark. This boat isn’t as sturdy as the one Russell Crowe built in 2014, but after a few tricks, the creatures band together and the flood subsides. The flaw in this meticulous planning is that the menacing lion, with the help of his henchmen, soon wants to rob the ship of the small provisions it carries before heading to an exceptionally fresh, all-you-can-eat buffet. Can the intrepid little mice – now joined by “Nina” – thwart this grand plan long enough for the peace dove to struggle through the wind and rain to find land? There’s nothing religious about this story, it’s just a nice animation that features a few jungle creatures and uses a few forgettable musical numbers to provide a sort of “Ark’s Got Talent” feel. It’s probably half an hour longer than it needs to be, but once it gets going, it doesn’t drag on about friendship and determination, while reminding us that bullies are usually the most cowardly of all groups. Sure, it’s a bit derivative, and it certainly reminded me of The Lion King at times, but it’s harmless family entertainment that will be perfect for kids watching TV at Christmas.
