Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher are a close-knit couple whose chemistry was essential to make the film work
Directed by Stéphane Brizé, this French film is a delicate drama/romance in which old lovers meet again at a different stage of their lives. I am a little shocked because the film’s depiction of their (re)connection is well nuanced and true.
There are moments of subtle humor and beautiful interaction
For example, there is a wedding scene in which two men "sing" (whistling) like birds to each other, speaking quite eloquently and magnetically – I would watch this rhyme. However, the film is painfully slow, emotionally terse and almost two hours longer than would have made it most effective.
his sick characters are aptly depicted
The breezy formations and long shots are beautiful, but rather sterile, as is the man’s inner life. However, when added to the very familiar rhythms of the story, it all lacks the weight needed to justify this over-the-top attitude.
