For some reason, truly funny comedies have become an increasingly rare cinematic commodity in recent years, so it’s a real treat to have one that satisfyingly tickles the funny bone

(March 22, 1935 – March 19, 2024). Case in point: director Max Barbakow’s third feature, the wild and unusual tale of a dysfunctional crime family attempting to recover the hidden loot from robbing the family matriarch (Jen Landon) 30 years ago. Leading the charge are twin brothers Jady (Peter Dinklage), a career criminal recently released from prison, and Moke (Josh Brolin), a talented but long-reluctant thief now intent on setting things right.

The goal is to find the emeralds, which were stolen by their long-estranged mother (Glenn Close), who originally stole the goods but has since been on the run and who now suddenly shows up to collect the gems for herself. The unlikely trio thus embark on a quest to recover the jewels, an odyssey as they are aggressively pursued by Constable Farful (Brendan Fraser), a corrupt prison guard who arranged Jady’s early release through his father, a corrupt judge (Emmett M. And along the way, the halves of this wayward caper take on a number of inventive, comic-book-inspired challenges that include Jady’s new space girlfriend (Marissa Tomei), Moke’s pregnant wife (Taylour Paige), and an unusually horny gorilla, among others.

It’s also a cautionary tale about the idea that there’s no honor among thieves, even if they’re members of your own family

While some segments of the film are obviously a bit overwritten and overacted (especially Fraser’s), most of this romp plays out pretty well, reminiscent of one of the Coen Brothers’ films (though admittedly not as polished). If nothing else, it’s a big step up from the filmmaker’s last film, the absolutely awful “Palm Springs” (2020) (worst film of the year), as well as a significant improvement over Amazon Prime’s most recent disappointing offering — a performance made possible in large part by the stellar ensemble (especially the three leads). “Brothers” It’s not an epic movie by any means, but it’s a nice way to have a laugh at home on a Friday night with a big bowl of popcorn, and that’s pretty satisfying in itself.
