After escaping from the island prison where he spent 14 years on false charges of treason, Edmond Dantes returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the people who betrayed him. The film’s budget is estimated at 42.9 million euros. « The Count of Monte Cristo » is the most expensive French film of 2024. So, I actually read the book, the actual book(s), not the watered down version you find in a bookstore. This story is exciting, full of characters, intricate, and the details tell how it all fits together. However, in a completely normal film, there is nothing of this, except for the outline of the main plot lines. There is no good but bad, no double ending and no basis for it all – the relationship between the abbot and Edmond, who, in fact, becomes a son. There is also no backstory from the escape to Edmond’s arrival in Paris, which generally makes the whole plot of revenge believable. I also can’t help but miss old Mr. Villefort, whose side story is so important to who Edmond really is as a person. So, if you want to watch a French drama of the 19th century, which is quite suitable for good actors, go ahead. Do you want to immerse yourself in the real story of the Count of Monte Cristo? Find an antique dealer, because this is the only place where you will find this masterpiece.
